The Tonic of Wildness

April 9, 2017 By

“We need the tonic of wildness… At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.” – Thoreau

Hohenschwangau, Germany

Standing next to the towering Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, we turned to see the countryside splayed out in front of us, the mountains towering behind and to the side. We were taken aback by the captivating beauty and wildness of the terrain around us. Images of the people who had once lived and breathed and moved within this majestic territory filled my mind and heart. What stories did they tell? What dreams did they silently whisper to the tress?

It was there I remembered the absolute earnest need for wildness and mystery in our lives. We cannot truly live in only modern landscapes, with modern inventions, always connected. We need to escape to the wilds and let ourselves follow paths unknown. That is our calling. That is our home.
